The device uses a braided sleeve mechanism that functions like a Chinese finger trap, securing drains without the pain and skin irritation associated with traditional suture-based methods. The K-LOCK™ features a rotary retainer that holds drain tubing parallel to the skin and allows repositioning to avoid pressure points and clothing interference (Control Your Comfort™ positioning). The company reports that approximately 50 million surgical drains are placed annually in the U.S., with current suture-based securement methods resulting in high rates of patient complaints regarding pain, skin irritation, and impact on activities of daily living. A clinical study published in Plastic Surgery Global Open (2025) conducted at Wake Forest School of Medicine's Department of Plastic Surgery demonstrated that K-LOCK™ reliably secured drains, could be applied faster than sutures, caused no adverse events, and resulted in statistically significant patient preference across all measured categories: maintenance/care, activities of daily living, skin irritation, itching, tugging, overall pain, and overall experience. The device addresses a significant clinical need in post-operative care by reducing inadvertent drain loss (which can cost $5,000–$35,000 per event and require hospital readmission or return to OR) and improving patient quality of life during recovery.
