About Brown Emergency Medicine
Brown Emergency Medicine (BEM) is the academic emergency medicine practice plan of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. With over 120 emergency physicians, BEM provides care to more than 250,000 patients annually across several hospitals in Rhode Island. As a founding member of Brown Physicians, Inc., BEM operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on healthcare delivery, education, and research.
BEM staffs emergency departments 24/7 at key Lifespan hospitals, including Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, which is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. The group specializes in pediatric emergency medicine and supports an Emergency Medicine Research Laboratory, focusing on various medical research areas. BEM also emphasizes education through residency programs, fellowships, and training initiatives, fostering the next generation of leaders in emergency medicine while promoting diversity and care for underserved populations.
