About ACGME

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is a not-for-profit organization established in 1981 that sets and monitors standards for graduate medical education (GME) in the United States. It accredits approximately 8,800 to 13,000 residency and fellowship programs across 130 specialties and subspecialties. ACGME ensures that physicians are trained to deliver safe, high-quality care through a peer-review process involving 28 Residency Review Committees. ACGME's mission focuses on improving health care and population health by enhancing the education of resident and fellow physicians. It aims to achieve a transformed GME system that prioritizes patient experience, population health, and practitioner well-being. The organization emphasizes competency-based education, physician well-being, and evidence-based practices, while also offering global services to support international postgraduate medical education.
